He finished the season 13-5 with a 3.16 ERA (fourth-best in the American League) and 221 strikeouts (third-best in the AL).
Bedard's 221 strikeouts set a club record, breaking the previous mark of 218 strikeouts by Mike Mussina. Bedard also tied the single-game franchise record with 15 strikeouts on July 7 against the Texas Rangers. He was named the American League pitcher of the month in July, going 5-0 with a 2.21 ERA in six starts.
Bedard became a full-time starter for the Orioles in 2004, going 6-10 with a 4.59 ERA while leading all rookies with 121 strikeouts. In 2005, Bedard started 5-1 with a 2.08 ERA before missing two months with a knee injury. He wasn't the same pitcher when he returned, winning just one of his final 15 starts. Bedard finished the season with a 6-8 record and 4.00 ERA.
In 2006, Bedard went 15-11 with a 3.76 ERA and 171 strikeouts. He started a career-high 33 games and tossed a career-high 196 1/3 innings. Bedard led the Orioles in wins, innings pitched, games started and strikeouts. His ERA was ninth-best in the AL.
Bedard was born in the Ottawa suburb of Navan, Ontario, Canada on March 6, 1979. In college, he played for Norwalk (Conn.)
