Brian Roberts is a second baseman for the Baltimore Orioles. The Orioles drafted Roberts with the 50th pick of the 1999 Major League Baseball amateur draft, and he made his Baltimore debut in 2001 after playing in just 170 minor league games. After bouncing back and forth between Triple-A Rochester and Baltimore during the 2001 and 2002 seasons, Roberts earned the job as the Orioles second baseman in May during the 2003 season. He stole 23 bases and hit .270 during that year. In 2004, Roberts set a team record with 50 doubles. It was the most doubles by a switch-hitter in American League history. Cal Ripken Jr. previously held the club record for doubles. Roberts' best statistical season to date was 2005, when he batted .314 with 45 doubles, 18 home runs, 73 RBI and 27 stolen bases. He was named the American League's starting second baseman for the 2005 All-Star Game. In 2007, Roberts set a career high with 50 stolen bases. The 5-foot-9, 180-pound switch-hitter was born in Durham, N.C., on Oct. 9, 1977. Roberts began his collegiate baseball career at North Carolina, where his father, Mike Roberts, was the Tar Heels' coach. After his father was dismissed as UNC's coach, Roberts transferred to South Carolina, where he finished his college career. He was named a second team All-American by Baseball America during his time with the Gamecocks.
