The 1st Mariner Arena opened in 1962 as the Civic Center. It became the Baltimore Arena in 1986, then 1st Mariner Arena in 2003. With a capacity of 11,000-14,000, the arena holds a variety of events such as concerts, sports events and family-oriented shows. The arena, which is in downtown Baltimore near the Inner Harbor, is home to the Baltimore Blast soccer team. National and international acts such as the Rolling Stones, Elvis, the Beatles, Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana), Rascal Flatts and U2 have performed there over the years. In 2006, the arena held the 55th Annual Miss USA Competition. Philadelphia-based SMG manages the arena, which is owned by the city. In 2007, a report commissioned by the Maryland Stadium Authority recommended that the city find a replacement for the aging arena, especially if it wanted to attract a minor-league sports team. The report found that repairing the existing arena would be too costly. Seven groups are presenting plans, which include alternate locations, and the Baltimore Development Corp. may make its recommendation to the city by spring 2008.
