Founded in 1881, the University of Connecticut is the state's premiere public university with a total student enrollment of about 28,000. UConn is the state's land grant public university with a main, rural campus in Storrs, five regional campuses, schools of social work and law in Hartford and schools of medicine and dentistry at the Univeristy of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington. A research university, UConn has 14 schools and colleges, 8 undergraduate degrees, 16 graduate degrees and has five professional degree programs. The entering freshman class, which has hovered around 3,240 in Storrs for the past several years, has an mean, combined SAT score of 1,192. The university has 1,755 full-time faculty and a student-faculty ratio of 17 to 1. UConn is ranked the top public university in New England, according to U.S. News & World Report. Uconn's newly-hired president is Michael J. Hogan from the University of Iowa. The university is in the midst of a 20-year, $2.3 billion construction program called UConn 2000. The program has transformed the campus with new dorms, classrooms and research labs. But the massive contruction project has brought its share of problems. The university had to spend an additional $28 million to correct hundreds of fire and building code violations that were found in many of the new and removated buildings. The university has $181.8 million in external funding for research, including $90.1 million for the health center. The university's annual budget is $1.5 billion with an endowment of $300 million. Tuition, fees, room and board cost $17,702 a year for Connecticut residents and $31,646 for out-of-state-students. The university has 174,500 alumni, 102,000 of whom live in Connecticut.
